    James Bulger (No, Not Whitey!)

The little boy in England tortured and murdered after being lead away from a mall. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were given new identities when they were released.

I don't get it, if you saw what they did to this child, the last thing they deserve is a new start.

I remember that case, I was following it as part of my Criminal Justice class in HS, I also dont agree they shouldve been giving new lives/identities ans the whole nine yards, and personally i feel those who they wre intimately involved with SHOULD know exactly who, they are getting involved with.

Too awful for words, I have sons the same age as the boys that did this and a son a similar age to little Jamie.

The CCTV images that were shown of those two evil little b******s leading that little boy out of the shopping centre are haunting.

They should not have been given new identities etc. and allowed to build a new life, no way.

l'd be sick about it if l was one of those people who stopped them and let them on their way. but how could they have known? it was 2 kids who said they were taking their brother home. who would doubt it?

one of the things that makes me ill (and there is a lot) is they kept telling jamie they were bringing him back to his mommy. then would torture him more. honest to god it makes me want to cry.

yeah,i know what your saying but people did realize something was not right. All one of them had to do was call the cop's and if every thing had been legit,no harm done and they would have been driven home, and little james would still be with us today!

Does anyone know what became of the murderers? Did anyone ever uncover where they live? Don't they have kids now?

It's not that simple people don't want to see something wrong so they tend not to process the information.

I don't care how young they were, they displayed a blatant disregard for life and the pain of a younger, helpless child. They don't deserve shit.

Man do I ever agree. I donlt know how much mental health care they have had but I sure as hell wouldn;t want to have them around my children. I think it is unfair to the general public to let them get out and give them new id's.

I remember when this story was playing out. Their victim reminds me sooooo much of my nephew, and the footage of him being led away from the mall by those boys absolutely haunted me !! These 2 miscreants wer so willfull and exacting in the torture and murder of that child that I believe they should have never been able to see the light of day. Their behavior was so deeply ingrained and innate that I do not feel it could ever be "rehabilitated" out of them !!

I don't understand how his girlfriend has no idea who he is. Surely she or someone close to her read that article. There are quite a few things in there about him that should ring a bell for her.

They blamed it on the film "Child's Play"

Ultimately it was 2 boys with seriously bad minds who unfortunately came across each other - a bit like Myra Hindley and Ian Brady. The paths cross and evil is committed.

Poor little James Bulger - god bless him and his parents.

I couldn't agree more. Absolutely ridiculous that they have been given a fresh start. I will never understand how outright murders can ever be let out of jail, much less be given a new identity to go on with their lives.

I come from Liverpool where this terrible crime happened. It shocked the whole city to the core. The area around where James was found became a shrine to him and many people left flowers and small cuddly toys. There were thousands and thousands of tributes. James' funeral was on the TV live, and one of the songs they played during this was Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven". Everytime I hear this song I think of James.

All parents warn their kids about stranger danger and try to ensure their safety, but how do you warn your kids about other kids?

The parents of James later divorced. James' mum, Denise, later remarried and now has three more children. The case still makes the news, particularly here and Denise clearly still suffers her loss and grieves for James. It's difficult to imagine what how she feels - as must any bereaved parent. Denise also had a stillborn baby before she had James - tragic.

James would have been 18 years old in February 2008, and the local media reported on this and interviewed his mum, who described some of things she was doing to celebrate this milestone.

The two boys who murdered James were clearly evil IMO. One came from a very dysfunctional family, whilst the other came from quite a stable family. It has always been clear to me that one was the leader and one followed. They have both now been released into the community, with new identities.

When they committed this crime they were 10 years old. Do they deserve to stay locked up for ever? The mum part of me screams most certainly YES, but another part of me says they were children in prison for 15 years, and now should be given a chance.

What do others think about children who kill and their punishments?

I remember seeing a documentry with James' father. It was heart breaking. I have never seen a man so soul destroyed and broken. He still blames himself, feeling he was Jams' Father and that he should have been there to protect him. I know it is said that, if you learn to forgive you can come to terms with what has happend, but how the hell could you forgive that .I have a nearly 10 year old and she knows right from wrong and not to hurt or be cruel to others.

They were evil, they are evil. Evil like that isn't something you grow out of. When I was ten I knew murder was wrong & I certainly knew that kind of sadistic torture was wrong. So no, I don't believe for second they are rehabilitated. What happens when murderers, drunk drivers, drug dealers, rapists, molesters are set free? They re-offend. They do not learn their lesson, they do it again as soon as they can.

It's plenty old enough to be aware of what is acceptable & what is not. What ten year old would even dare to think of doing something like that?

This situation reminds me of the Mary Bell case. She killed a boy when she was very young and after she got out of prison she received the same 'protection'. I think her whereabouts are still kept confidential as well as her new name. I personally don't think these convicted killers should be allowed to hide from their crimes.

I think on crimelibrary.com there was an update that Mary Bell had a daughter, and the media discovered her new identity?

How can a child be so cold-blooded?? I don't get it? I have a 5 year old and 3 year old and if anyone they know gets so much as a scrape, they're both scrambling to bandage it.

Can you imagine? Certainly some tendencies are passed on, but also, some you're just born with. I truly believe someone can be "born bad", and imagine what that would do to you as a parent? I've always wondered where the children that killed him's parents stood. Obviously we knew how James' parents felt....but what about the kids parents?

I believe if the crime is an adult crime then the punishment should be adult....10 years old is old enough to know right from wrong and they knew what they were doing. You dont grow out of evil..you just dont. Funny I heard about a lawyer there who smuggled money from his clients and he goes away for 40 years..these kids torture and kill a child and are let out and protected....how is that right??

That little bitch even went to the mother of the child she murdered (before they discovered it had been her who killed him) and asked if she could see the little boy. The boy's poor mother said "sorry, but he is dead". She responded "I know, I wanted to see him in his coffin!"

These boys were determined to abduct and kill a child that day. That is almost as disturbing as the crime itself. I wonder how much later they were charged with t his attempted abduction. If the cops were alerted that day, then they should have been taken into custody or escorted home or something. Society wronged that little boy that day in so many ways. First with this, then when several people saw the boys beating little Jamie they ignored the behavior. Well folks, it doesn't just happen in America!

I wonder if it is him in the article. It does say that he committed crimes a a juvenile, wonder if it was the murder of the little boy. If he was convicted of these new crimes, I don't understand why they couldn't reveal his true identity to the public. Seems like the deal would/should be void.

Several people saw the two boys with James, and two stopped the trio and asked why James was crying. They were not beating him at this time. James was apparently crying and asking for his mother. One of the boys replied that James was his brother and he was taking him home. A plausible answer. These people were absolutely gutted and felt responsible and now live with "if onlys".

Horrible child deaths like this, unfortunately, happen all over the world including America - just have a look at some of the threads on this forum. The reason James death made headlines was because it was such a very rare occurance.

Sean did say he was Thompson but as far as I know he has been proven to be just Sean, no connection to the killers although he also said he was in juvie with the killers.

I think it's Thompson who is supposedly living with a man & the man knows what happened. How could he stay with a murderer??

    The murder

Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were truanting from school on February 12, 1993. They were in their final year of primary school at Walton St Mary Church of England Primary School. [3]

That day, in the New Strand Shopping Centre, Bootle, they attempted to walk off with a young child. They had succeeded in luring a two-year-old boy away from his mother, and were in the process of taking him out of the shopping centre, when she noticed him missing, ran outside, and called him back. For this, the boys were later charged with attempted abduction; however, the charge was dropped when the jury failed to reach a verdict.

CCTV footage of James Bulger being kidnapped by Venables and Thompson (above Bulger), recorded on shopping centre CCTV

That same afternoon, James Bulger (often wrongly mentioned as "Jamie Bulger" in press reports - he was never called "Jamie" by his family), from nearby Kirkby, went on a trip with his mother Denise to a nearby shopping centre. Whilst there, at some point Mrs. Bulger realised that her son had disappeared. The two boys had taken him by the hand and led him out of the precinct. This moment was captured on a CCTV camera at 15:39.

The boys took Bulger on a 2 mile (4 km) walk. At one point, they led him to a canal, where he sustained some injuries to his head and face, after apparently being dropped to the ground. Later on in their journey, a witness reported seeing Bulger being kicked in the ribs by one of the boys, to encourage him along.

During the entire walk, the boys were seen by no fewer than 38 people Some of these people reported that there were signs of bruising on Bulger's face, while others reported that he appeared happy and was seen laughing, the boys seemingly alternating between hurting and distracting him. A few members of the public challenged the two older boys, but they claimed they were looking after their younger brother, or that he was lost and that they were taking him to the police station, and the boys were able to avoid being foiled. They eventually led Bulger to a section of railway line near the disused Walton & Anfield railway station on Walton Lane.

From the facts disclosed at trial, at this location one of the boys threw blue modelling paint on Bulger's face. They kicked him and hit him with bricks, stones and a 22 lb (10 kg) iron bar. They then placed batteries in his mouth (although false reports claimed that the batteries were pushed up his anus were spread by a chain letter [4] that also claimed that Bulger's fingers were cut off using scissors; this is also untrue). James suffered skull fractures as a result of the iron bar being struck around his head; this wound is believed to have caused his death.

Before they left him, the boys laid Bulger across the railway tracks and weighted his head down with rubble, in hopes that a passing train would hit him and make his death appear to be an accident.

Two days later, on 14 February, Bulger's body was discovered; a forensic pathologist later testified that he had died before his body was run over by an oncoming train.

As the circumstances surrounding the death became clear, tabloid newspapers compared the killers with Myra Hindley and Ian Brady who had committed the Moors Murders during the 1960s. They denounced the people who had seen Bulger but not realised the trouble he was in as the "Liverpool 38" (see Kitty Genovese, bystander effect). The railway embankment upon which his body had been discovered was flooded with hundreds of bunches of flowers: one of these floral tributes, a single rose, was laid by Thompson. Within days, he and Venables were arrested, after an investigation led by Detective Superintendent Albert Kirby of the Merseyside Police.

Forensics tests confirmed that both boys had the same blue paint on their clothing as was found on Bulger's body. Both had blood on their shoes; blood on Thompson's shoe was matched to that of Bulger through DNA tests.

The two boys were charged with Bulger's murder on February 22, 1993. They were the youngest people to be charged with murder in England and Wales during the 20th century.

Is anything known about these boys' home lives? It's hard to believe evil could begin so early...and James was so absolutely precious.

Oh geez, I had nearly forgotten about this one. I still have trouble comprehending such an evil act!
Just drink lots of Kool-Aid, and take one of these blue pills three times a day.

I live in the UK and i can still remember this crime as it was so horrific. A few of you asked why the murderers should be given new ID's and protected ? I'm afraid thats the british justice system for you. They are like obsessed with human rights of criminals and cant be seen to be infringing them.

It is a complete joke, it makes me so mad. They could be living in my street, maybe even asking my sister out for a date and we wouldnt know a thing.
