That was my guess too before reading the story. But no, what Lego has done is created a girl figure, instead of them all being those androgynous things that would ride in the little cars and such kids built from Legos. And one of the playsets features a kitchen, ala Barbie's Dream Kitchen or any of the other hundreds of examples of companies that sell such products.

The feminists say it's bad for a little girl's self image. Psychologists say there is a difference in gender predisposition being the real dictator of what children want when it comes to toys.

I don't think either of the above is an absolute. And I know children go through phases. So to me, either side arguing about absolutes when it comes to something like this is forgetting the individual. At the bottom line I think people should remember that when children play with toys, they decide what the toy should do, not the other way around.

I played with Barbie Dolls when I was a kid (for the short time before my brother decapitated them with Grandpa's skill saw). I grew up to learn how to weld, got a university education in political science and now I do retail Marketing. Playing with something with boobs did not relegate me to the manicurist's chair.

Now the trend is that they come in kits and you follow a set of instructions to complete a pre-designed item. Somewhere along the line they dumbed down the creativity aspect of it.

I am not too upset they created a line for girls, they are trying to cater to all markets. Anyway, it's up to the kid what they want to play with. If when in the shop, the girls want it, they will tell their mom to buy it. If they get it as a gift they will simply play or not play with it. The choice is ultimately theirs.

I'm not upset about it, either. Here in the States where I am, they sell different kinds of Lego sets. You have your themed sets, with directions to make a pre-designed item in a Star Wars, Harry Potter, or other theme. I see those as challenges for older kids, like kids my son's age. Then there's "regular" Legos, or original sets of bricks that you use your imagination to build whatever you want. They also have the bricks for toddlers and those come in "regular" sets.

Quoting a comment that you think is totally out of line or offensive only gives legs to that comment. It doesn't matter if you quote it to say, "Shame on you," or whatever. What you are doing is taking the comment and doubling the number of places it is written. Then someone else sees it and quotes it and now you have the offending comment in three times as many places as it was originally. And so on.

And the more something is repeated, the more it sinks in. So if someone writes, "All Greek men are slimy criminals," and you are a Greek man that takes offense, almost all you are accomplishing by quoting the remark is legitimizing it. And the more ridiculous the original comment, the less helpful it is to quote it.

If someone says an individual deserved a disease and you quote him, to me, as an administrator, you are lending some level of support to his view because you are repeating it and reinforcing it in the minds of readers that otherwise would have just skipped past it or who had a hard enough time reading it in the first place and would rather not see it dredged up again.
