Gunman kills at least 50 in Las Vegas

Can't believe I'm the first one to post about this. I saw the news this morning and came over here to see what people were saying about it.

The OJ joke isn't funny - it's getting old.

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/02/us/las...ter/index.html

The gunman, identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, unleashed a hail of bullets from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said.

In times like this it's somewhat natural for people to turn to humor to try and make sense of things. I understand that it can be offensive to some but to others it helps them to process the situation.

I thought it funny but I understand why others do not. What I do not understand is when people try and push their politics over things like this. From the accounts I've seen he had automatic weapons. That means he either passed very stringent background checks or he got them illegally. No laws will stop someone intent on doing harm.

From what hubbs was saying the guy's father was a bank robber and on the FBI's most wanted list at one time. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/02/us/las...rnd/index.html here is the story of that, I'll look on Huff post where hubby said he read it, according to this article the shooter was wealthy, a retired accountant, no indication of why he would do this. I am stumped as well, seems there were no financial issues or legal trouble.

I gotta chew on this one a bit more. I think a wee part of being a death hag is inappropriate morbid humor. For some, it's a way to cope with shock and tragedy.

Couldn't have put it better myself, Cash.

Last I heard the injured count is up to 500.

My neighbor lady left for Vegas on Friday. Praise the Lord she's at her sister's home and unharmed.

For me it's morbid humor. There was a heck of a lot of that around here once upon a time.

I just found out that Sissy's ex and his wife were staying in the Mandalay Bay hotel and were watching some Michael Jackson show in a theater when they were bused to another hotel. Wouldn't that be a laugh a minute. Sighs of relief in the family. I've known Jeff since he was about 13 and love him like a brother.

When I saw the OJ post I thought WTF! But, I got it. I would hate to think what I would be like if I didn't have a sense of humor. That aside, I'm dealing with this horrific tragedy, and as cash said way too many guns. Anyone, anywhere, can get them legally or otherwise, laws are not going to prevent people from getting them. Sad and disturbing.

I found the OJ joke funny as well. I do have a morbid sense of humor. What a horrific tragedy. I just want to know why. I suppose there really isn't an answer beyond mental illness (extreme mental illness). Every time one of these mass shootings happens all I can think is, people are going to keep on until this country is ruled by martial law and we look like one of those countries that have military police with guns everywhere. They'll stop having any concerts or festivals where there are large gatherings of people. It's a scary thought.

Glad to see some of you guys took my comment the way I intended it.
I knew that some would not and I get that.

The only comment I'm going to make in this thread about the whole too many (or not enough) guns point of view is that we already have laws against murder; and some elements of society don't seem to find those a hindrance or a deterrent.

I see where ISIS\ISIL is claiming that the shooter was a "convert" and they're claiming "credit".
Obviously we don't know the facts yet, but I suspect BS on that claim - I guess we'll see.

    What a horrid situation.

Certainly possible, I suspect way more likely than an ISIS connection; but who can say?
During the time that I lived on the coast there were numerous suicides committed in public by people who had gotten into that situation.

Theres not going to be an ISIS connection. They are going to find some lengthy manifesto somewhere that hopefully will shed some light on his descent into madness. A lot going around regarding his gambling but I wouldn't think you take that to this extreme. Maybe shoot yourself but not 500+ others.

There has to be a way to track the number of fire arms someone buys. This guy was a one man brigade and there just isn't a law abiding reason to own that many firearms.

They aren't illegal. They are highly regulated. You have to pass very stringent background checks to purchase ones and the only ones allowed to be sold are the grandfathered ones that have been around for years.

In actual reality, for most they might as well be illegal.

Personally, my guns are for sport and if needed, self defense.
I'm not going to go so far as to say that nobody has a legit use for a silencer; but I don't know what it would be right off the top of my head.
That doesn't mean that I think they should necessarily be illegal - I just haven't thought it through.

I can say this though - if I ever have to use a gun for self defense, in addition to it firing one big damned piece of lead; I want it to make one big freaking boom in the direction of my target.

Guns are the great equalizer as far as weapons go. Best for self defense even for the smallest adult. A mad man will find another type of weapon to wreak havoic and mass death upon victims if they are planning to do so. Airplanes, bombs, cars, etc. Not having guns wont stop them as we have all seen unfortunatly

Silencers, or suppressors, do not quiet the weapon like it does in Movies and Television. It does help with the balance and recoil from your handgun. I could see having one for home defense or target shooting. Lot less rough on your ears. Holster would be a bit big. This madman was going to do mass destruction, one way or another. I would not be surprised if somebody, either willingly or not, helped him. Timothy McVeigh didn't need a gun to do his thing. It's a mental health problem. The HIPAA act needs to be changed. If yo are a danger to society, society needs to know that.

If the people in the crowd couldn't hear the shots then they would not have been able to react and get down ( and make themselves small as the experts will tell you). Surely the slaughter would have been worse. Not to mention the increased threat to law enforcement who also rely on the sound made by gunshots.

Agree 100% on the first point. Look at countries with strict gun laws. You still have people carrying out bombings and driving cars through crowds.

Regarding Mental Heath; What about people that don't undergo treatment for mental health problems? Should we require every adult have a mandatory full mental health screening? Even if we do, there are going to be some people that don't want help and would pass through the screening by telling people what they want to hear. Obviously, someone who does this kind of thing isn't mentally stable, but if they never stepped foot in a psychologist/psychiatrist office, how would anyone know? The problem with mental health is that much of it is subjective unless/until a person starts acting out, and by then it can be too late. Not trying to argue really, just trying to get some dialogue going.

The shooter had no law enforcement record other than a traffic citation. A gun shop owner that sold him a gun said he passed all of the background checks with zero red flags. Contrast that with the Pulse nightclub shooter who was on an FBI watch list, but was able to get a gun anyway.

This is something I've pointed out for years. Even though I acknowledge the answer is not an easy one but there will never be answer as long as we refuse to discuss it.

The NRA gets all the blame but it isn't the NRA that supports HIPAA restrictions, it's the medical community. Mental Health professionals. They argue how allowing some clerk at Wall Mart access to their mental health status will stigmatize patients. This is true but it's a discussion we need to have. It's something in the end we can not change but we will never know until we discuss it.

Most are not looking for answers but rather they are looking for blame and demonization of groups they see as politically aligned against them. Politics is what is wrong with America.

I would like to see ATM like machines wherever guns are sold (including gun shows). If you want to buy a gun, put in your ID and instigate your own check. You get a certificate if you are allowed to buy good for X amount of hours. Show that to the clerk when you buy. If you don't pass, nobody knows anything, your privacy is kept.

Yes I know there are problems with that idea, but problems can be worked out by people smarter than me.

When you are shooting from a high rise with other buildings around the sound of the shot will echo all around. Trained LEO's are trained to try and get a direction. But, with the concert and all the crowd noise people probably didn't know what was going on until bodies started hitting the ground. Then the panic run. Folks got trampled, they were in a large group where one high velocity bullet can hit 3 people. What a bullet like that will do to a human Body is pretty destructive. My friend and former co-worker was assassinated last November by a High Velocity Deer Hunting Rifle. The bastard got him in the torso and it pulverized his internal organs. They teach you in Deer hunting to shoot for the torso and let the hydrostatic shock take care of the rest.

The Black Ops Outfits probably have silencers that will never be seen by the general public, as it should be. Nobody, that is not in an active war zone, needs special equipment on their long guns.

There are Nation States on this planet that could not set up an ops like this. He was set for a much longer battle. He had cams watching the halls, he had shotguns and pistols for up close fighting. This fucktard ran a tight operation. I don't think he let any one person know all that he was up to.

Some things are like the Spanish Inquisition, you just don't expect it.

That's what I thought but the reports say that for the 72 minutes from the first shots until they stormed his room he only fired for 9-11 minutes. He had plenty more time and ammunition to makes things much worse.

I found the leaked photo of the gunman that the sheriff was talking about in yesterdays press conference. It's a pretty graphic head shot. Are there rules against posting something like that?

I don't think so. The photo is posted above. The photos of those running for their lives and laying in blood bother me but that piece of shit's death photo does not.

I believe that he stopped shooting the crowd once the security guard approached the door, which is why the SWAT team waited to move in.

My guess is; he left the window to shoot at the security guard (the hotel suite was pretty big), and by the time he got back, the crowd had dispersed. At that point he probably decided whether he should fight the inevitable SWAT team or off himself. He probably realized that fight would be shortly lost anyway, so he killed himself instead.
