Man to Launch Homemade Rocket to Prove Earth is Flat

I feel like there are myriad ways in which this could go horribly wrong. Also, the damn thing is steam powered. (At least it's renewable energy?)

From the WaPo: "Assuming the 500-mph, mile-long flight through the Mojave Desert does not kill him, Mike Hughes told the Associated Press, his journey into the atmosflat will mark the first phase of his ambitious flat-Earth space program."

    Sounds safe enough to me.
I'm gonna have to get serious about finishing that space shuttle I've been working on.

It's red, white and blue - it would be since I'm mainly making it out of empty Budweiser cans.

Gee - proving the earth is flat.

I wonder why NASA never thought about that?
Next time I'm flying to wherever at 30,000 feet I really must remember to look out the window to see the lack of curvature on the planet below me.

    Indeed - and he's also a two-for-one "double threat".

We're talking about him here and we'll probably be talking about him in the Darwin Awards thread too.

We can only hope - but it's a confident kind of hope - sort of like when hoping that the sun will rise tomorrow.
It takes a lot of idiots doing what idiots do to keep a thread like that going.

Of course, if the guy manages to get airborne and look down at the globe - they call it a "globe" for a reason - he'll have no choice but to confess that his very own eyes are part of the international conspiracy trying to hide the fact that the earth is flat.

Obviously, there are some old, big-money companies that stand to lose billions of dollars a year if the truth comes out about that.

One might say that the repercussions will be felt to the four corners of the earth.

Se y'all later in the Darwin thread!

Maybe so, but he has already survived one such grand attempt.
Most people get something common or bland listed as the cause of death on their death certificates:

    Natural causes
    Homicide
    Suicide

How many people actually qualify for "death by misadventure"?

I was done at "steam powered". It doesn't get 1 foot off the ground.

I think you're underestimating his skill as a rocket scientist.
The guy is a professional limo driver for crying out loud.
