This is a list compiled by a guy called Tom Reynolds, I thought I would share some of it with my fellow Hags. I will post a new entry every so often, comments are encouraged!
There are ten different genres of depressing songs:
I Was A Teenage Car Crash collects songs about selfless (and shockingly stupid) adolescents who sacrifice themselves so they can die for someone whose school locker just happens to be next to theirs.
I Hate Myself And Want To Die gathers together self-pitying songs in which the singer is under the delusion that his or her personal problems are of great interest to everyone.
Pretentious songs where excessive blather is mistaken for wisdom and sensitivity are found in the category I'm Trying To Be Profound And Touching, But Really Suck At It.
If I Sing About Drugs, People Will Take Me Seriously: 'I'm jamming a needle into my arm! Lemme tell you alllllll about it!'
In She Hates Me, I Hate Her, a couple's crumbling relationship is put to music, then dumped on listeners, who are expected to act as unpaid therapists.
For Horrifying Remakes Of Already Depressing Songs, a singer takes a mildly gloomy tune and transforms it into a thing of utter horror. Think Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with a rhythm section.
Narrative songs based on the kind of babble you hear from the drunk guy next to you at a bar who won't shut up are collected under the banner I'm Telling A Story Nobody Wants To Hear.
I Had No Idea That Song Was So Morbid: the most deceptive of depressing songs, these camouflage unbelievably depressing lyrics under happy upbeat music.
A depressing song Hall of Fame, I Mope, Therefore I Am collects artists who've built their entire careers on bumming the shit out of everyone.
Finally, Perfect Storms: the absolute most depressing. Only a handful of tunes qualify as 'perfect storms', where numerous factors unite to create a depressing song of Live Wolverine Shoved Down My Pants proportions.

Teenage Death Songs!
Teen Angel, Leader of the Pack, Leader of the Laundromat (yes, I like Dr. Demento, thanks), and about forty million other songs.
They seem to fall into the category of, "My baby's dead, hit by a train, BIG ol' train, my baby's dead". Coming to you straight from WINO Radio, Wonderful WINO!
Tact is for those who are bad at sarcasm.
Mine is "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell. Realizing the "real" side of things when you "grow up". Sigh......now, I'm sad.

[SIZE=2]I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.

Willie Nelsons: "Angel Flying to close to the ground"
Jim Reeve's "On the blue side of lonesome"
Porter Wagoner "Carroll county accident"
Patsy Cline "she's got you"
Are a few of my favorite sad songs.

Wasn't there a real tear jerker called TELL LAURA I LOVE HER????
Tell Laura I Love Her
Released 1960
Tell Laura I Love Her was the first major Teenage Car Crash song - a weepy ballad about a love-struck teenage boy called Tommy who ends up getting cremated on a race track for the love of his girlfriend Laura. Tommy is especially gaga about his Laura and wants to buy her an engagement ring but, alas, doesn't have the money to buy it. That's when he sees a poster advertising a stock car race with a first prize of $1,000. That's the ticket, Tommy tells himself. I'll enter the race, compete in a sport I know nothing about, and come in first so that I'll win the thousand dollars. Ah, good plan.
Flushed with excitement, Tommy calls Laura. She isn't home so the doomed lad leaves a message with her mother: "Tell Laura I love her, tell Laura I need her, tell Laura I may be late, I've something to do that cannot wait."
Tommy is completely clueless as to the basic strategies of auto racing ie, slamming into a wall is generally not a good idea. Within a few laps, he rolls the car, which becomes engulfed in flames. He is pulled out of the wreckage, coughing up carbon before proclaiming his love for Laura and uttering with his last breath: "Tell Laura not to cry, my love for her will never die..." By the last verse, Laura is alone in the church, praying for her Tommy. In the chapel's echo-filled acoustics, she can still hear his haunting cries of how he still loves her - and it's just as creepy as it sounds.

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride never fails to choke me up...
And then, Buffy killed Edward. The End.
I've always found "Exit Music (For a Film)" by Radiohead and "No Distance Left to Run" by Blur to be pretty depressing.
I can not beleive I am going to admit this, but mine is "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey. Shoot me now....
Oh gawd, how about "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks?
And another 70's weeper... (lots of them from the 70's!) "Wildfire?"
I could write a huge long list... there are so many!!!
found completely by accident when my father died and used at his funeral....
Daddy's Little Girl by Karla Bonoff
Also...Red Sails in the Sunset...even the instrumental will get to me and most so...doesn't matter where they are playing but a funeral makes it worse...BAGPIPES!
All By My Self - Eric Carmen
Hurt - Johnny Cash

Speaking of Laura.....
"Think of Laura, but laugh, don't cry, I know she'd want it that way"....
I believe that comes from a song called "Think of Laura" by Christopher Cross. Does anyone else remember it?
And if that doesn't bring you down deep enough, how bout good old Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally" or "All By Myself" I don't recall who released that one originally but Celine did it....as well as a very gut-wrenching lil ditty called "FLY", written for the dead child of a friend or relative.
Asleep, I Know It's Over, and Reel Around the Fountain by The Smiths make me upset.
The Engine Driver by The Decemberists...
Also, Glósóli by Sigur Ròs makes me weep every time, but it's not necessarily "depressing".
The first one that comes to mind is the "MASH" theme song. It is about suicide then it would have to be "How do you get that lonely" by Blaine Larson, again about teen suicide and finally "Because of you" kelly Clarkson. It reminds me of how my mother is. My mom ain't winning any mother of year awards.
Gloomy Sunday
Hurt (Johnny Cash version)
Whiskey Lullaby (Alison Krauss & Brad Paisley)
Angel (Sarah McLachlan)

Anyone remember "Sad Eyes"? I think it was by Robert John (another 1/2 hit wonder). A guy singing to his mistress that it's over because his wife is coming home, and they "knew it couldn't last"...Schmuck!
"Shannon" by Henry Gross
About a lost dog. A pretty
bad song to boot.
Cheers all,

"He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother" and "The Air that I Breathe" both by the Hollies. Such a melancholy group!
Also, "Bittersweet Sypmphony" by The Verve
Mother's not dead - she's only sleeping
Just patiently waiting for Jesus to come
The birds will be singing while Mother lies sleeping
They will sing o'er her as the grave sinks away
Words and music by Charlie Monroe. If this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye, your heart is solid stone.
