Florida Man Going Through Divorce Allegedly Kills His 2 Children, Self

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — A Clay County man undergoing a divorce shot and killed his two sleeping children while his wife was showering and then shot himself, authorities said.
Jerry Whitelaw, 49, killed his son, Kevin, 16, and daughter, Katie, 11, as they slept in their home on Fleming Island, according to Sgt. Dan Mahla of the Sheriff's Office. Mahla said.
Whitelaw's wife called the sheriff's office shortly after 6 a.m. She said she was in the shower and did not hear anything, Mahla told The Florida Times-Union
Court records show Dana Whitelaw, 47, filed for divorce in August. Sheriff Rick Beseler said he was told the couple separated in June.
Jerry Whitelaw worked for a company called Idea Integration in downtown Jacksonville, but there was no answer at the company's telephone when called by The Associated Press.
Kevin Whitelaw was a junior at St. Johns County Day School and was on the school's football team, school officials said.
The school's 350 students were told about the tragedy in an assembly Tuesday morning and four grief counselors were called in to help the students.
Kate Whitelaw attended Grace Episcopal Day School in Orange Park and Dana Whitelaw also worked at the school.
Calls to the Clay County Sheriff's Office were not immediately returned.

What a horrible, tragic time Clay County is having lately. First Somer and now this. How sad!

I am a bit suspicious of the wife, though. Methinks there is more to this story.

She didn't hear anything? I'd love to know where they were being shot in comparsion to where her shower was.. I was just watching I think it was Law & Order Criminal intent where something like this happened..

He could have easily fired off three shots before she jumped out of the shower.

It does seem odd that she didn't hear anything though. Probably depends on the type of gun and, like MichellZearing said, where the shower is and where the shootings occurred. I also think its strange that a business doesn't answer their phone?

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Whether or not it will actually be ruled a suicide or not.

This case does seem awfully fishy...

Almost Susan Smith-esque, wanting a new life and eliminating the people that stood in her way of wanting a new life.

Although I can see that if he wanted custody of the kids and didn't want her to have them I can see how he would think that killing himself and the children was an option.

More often than not, especially with a small caliber pistol, shots sound like firecrackers. And, if you're even across the hall, in the bathroom, with the door closed, behind well-insulated walls and in the shower, you won't necessarily hear the shots.

But, we'll see what the deal is. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she decided to get rid of them all to start off her new life without them, or if he decided that if he couldn't have custody, by God, neither would SHE.

Curious that there's more concern/suspicion on the shots being heard than on the sad deaths in the family.

I think even us Hags are getting so used to seeing this that in an attempt to kinda diffuse the horror of it we are looking at it differently.

I think you are right Miho.. There have been so many murder suicides involving children over the years that we all try and focus on the investigation side of it rather than the logistics of these kids possibly screaming for their mother or father to stop.

Cheating on a man, and filing for divorce is SO different then killing your children and then yourself. Amazing that you feel the need to take this murderer's side, and then do the same thing you accused someone up thread of; there are no indications this woman cheated, but you would place that on her, like that would make this senseless act of violence make sense, or in some way ok.

This men is a selfish dickhead, anyone who would kill a child is. I do NOT care what their issues or reasons.

Disagreeing with me is one thing. I thought the personal attacks on board members were against the rules?

What is presented before us is he in all probability killed his children. How is that not a dickhead move?

Pure selfishness. I can't stand when these fuckfaces can't just off themselves. Take her kids, that will be what hits her the hardest. People do this quite a LOT actually.

It would be really fucked up if it turned out she was responsible.

hell she probably killed the kids, soon to be ex-hubby, and hurried up and took a shower to wash the blood off. She could of done it naked so no blood splatter was on the clothes. just a fucked up off the wall thought
