Humphrey Bogart

Did you know the reason he kept putting his finger and thumb up to the corners of his mouth was to make certain white liquid medicine for indigestion was not present? He was married three times before Betty Joan Perske (Lauren Bacall) became his wife.

Bogart was raised in a very well to do family, sent to the best schools and was expelled from Phillips Academy in preparation for medical studies at Yale. Bogart joined the Navy, was injured while escorting a prisioner, and that injury resulted in partial paralysis and lisp.

Bogart and Becall married on May 21, 1945 and lived in Beverly Hills. Their pets included 14 chickens, eight ducks, and a large dog. They had two children and remained married until his death on January 14,1957.

Bogart was one of Hollywoods best golfers. His son Stephen is named after the character in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. His daughter Leslie is named after actor Leslie Howard. Becall put the gold whistle for TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT with Bogart when he was cremated.

Anyone out there have any interesting stories thay can add about this very complex man?

Yeah, and Bacall was 19 at the time, wasn't she?

Then after she left the room, the closeup of Bogey's reaction...the muted whistle....whew...that said it all!

I loved him. I read His coffin contains a small, gold whistle, put there by his wife, Lauren Bacall.

I have heard this also. I think they also said his Mother was the artist that drew the original Gerber Baby and he was her model. Don't know how true it is though.

I researched then edited this post to add this link:

I wonder what will happen to his reputation when it's finally revealed that Bacall is a man?

This is true. He often was the model for many of his mothers paintings as well.

I have the "Maltese Falcon" on DVD and watch it about once every 2 or 3 months. Also loved him in the "African Queen".

The African Queen was my favorite.

My grandpa looked dead on like Bogart so I tear up a bit seeing him on the screen.

Good actor, I can watch Bogie in anything. I heard in his last days his assistant would get him up every morning, dress him nicely, and put him in a wheelchair to be able to spend time with his family. Class act.

Bacall's memoir "By Myself" is very sweet. The way she talks about Bogart is almost heartbreaking. She also did an interview somewhere where she said something to the effect of "It's been fifty years since I lost the love of my life, and some days it feel like it's been five minutes".

Made me sniffle.

I think she was damn lucky to have had a great love in her life. I think people get married, have kids and can live their whole life without that consuming firely love. It is a rare bird and we are lucky when we find it.
Good for her, good for them. Better five minutes of that kind of love than a life time of friendly indifference.
Regards,
Mary

I always found it interesting that for a man who came from a bit of a background BOGART seemed attracted to women who were tough as nails.

It's a shame they don't show his movies too often anymore.
Recently I think it was Turner Classic Movies had on The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
and the other day I caught the end of The Cain Mutiny.
Damn he was great in that.
