If you can get the nasal form you should probably do that. The shot isn't effective for a long term, or at least that's what I found out about the Seasonal vaccine. Duh, wish I had known that when I got it last month! But, anyway about the Swine flu... Apparently it's not going to be like the regular flu and go through a few month break so you need a vaccine that is going to last as long as possible.

I still haven't checked to see if I can get a Pneumonia vaccine at a lesser cost. Also, to unemployed people somewhere (can't remember where, think it's a pharmacy chain like CVS) is offering free vaccines to people without employment.

The nasal form of vaccination contains the live virus, thus it's not appropriate for the elderly, extremely young and anyone with a compromised immune system. It's just not an option for a lot of people--me included. Wish it was.
Still waiting for the vaccinations to arrive here...fingers drumming.

My DW took my two kids to the county clinic today to get their H1N1 shots. She waited in line for 45 minutes and had a choice of either the spray or shot (she chose the latter). So my kids finally got their shot, which pleases me to no end . The CDC recommends they get a booster in 30 days. DW and I will get ours when (if?) new supplies become available.

Front line healthcare workers got theirs early this week; as of today, the most vulnerable got theirs. The vaccine's available to the rest of us as of Monday.
And we have lots Barbo, so let me know - I'll ship you down my dose. I think I'm gonna pass on it. The only time I get sick it's just the 24-ounce flu.

I'm sorry for those kids but I stand by my comments, I was not painting a picture but simply telling the truth about my experience with it coming into my household.

I work for a municipality just outside of Atlanta and we are not in crisis mode. I work with Police/Fire/City Govt. and a large utility.... none are in crisis mode. Common sense preparations are being made..but nothing major. We have Dept. of Homeland Security staff and they are not really fired up over it either.

Between that and the comments of Doctors I know I think my attitude is pretty sound.

Oh, I didn't know that. Well, I figured about the elderly and the people with compromised immunity but, I didn't know about the kids. I think they're giving shots here anyway though.

Just fifteen minutes after opening to the public at noon Thursday, the North York Clinic was forced to close the line due to overwhelming demand, turning away scores of people who showed up to get their H1N1 vaccinations.
Huge lineups were also reported at the East York Civic Centre, prompting officials there to open the doors at 9am instead of noon. It has also since closed for the day.
Both clinics had over 1,000 people show up by midday.

"Our priority and our intention was that we would do health care workers from 9am until 12, following that we are dealing with people who are in the high-priority groups ... that includes pregnant women, children five years and under, and those with chronic illness," Joanne Cameron of Toronto Public Health explained at the East York Civic Centre.
All 10 Toronto clinics will open to the public on Monday and officials are urging people not in the high-risk groups to wait until then.
Progressive Conservative MPP Christine Elliot is calling for 24-hour clinics to ensure everyone who wants a shot can get one.
"The H1N1 virus isn't keeping nine to five hours and neither should we be," she said.
"My question again to [Ont. Health Minister Deb Matthews] is will you commit to keeping the H1N1 vaccination clinics open 24 hours a day?"
Matthews said public health units across the province are working hard and have responded appropriately to the high demand.

Pregnant women and children between six months and a year aren’t included in the high-risk groups being asked to turn out to clinics in Peel Region. Health officials there are asking those groups to visit their family doctor for a shot.

The provincial health ministry Wednesday announced changes to the system family physicians must use to order the pandemic vaccine. Previously, they had to order the shots in 500-dose lots.

The ordering requirement and the heavy paper work that accompanies it has discouraged many Toronto family doctors from handing out the shot. Only 500 of 4,000 local physicians signed on.
The vaccine and adjuvant are in separate vials when delivered, meaning mixing the shots is a lengthy process for doctors.
"Some people think it's money. I don't think it's about money," said Dr. Doug Mark, a general practitioner and president of the grassroots Coalition of Family Physicians of Ontario.
"I think it's come down to the process, that it's very cumbersome and time consuming for doctors ... The government is making things just too complicated and doctors, we're just throwing up our hands in the air and saying: 'You do it."'
"That's what a lot of doctors are saying."

The ability to order vaccine in smaller batches may change that.

Japan's death total is still just under 40 people, I think. There are now over 10,000 elementary, junior- and senior-high schools closed due to outbreaks.

Perhaps because the numbers are still manageable, or because we here in Japan are information obsessed, whenever someone dies they tell us the age and whether the victim had an underlying illness.

And my company is offering to partially reimburse the cost of vaccinations.

PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - Swine flu vaccination clinics on P.E.I. were running beyond capacity again on Thursday and three of them had to close because they ran out of the day's supply of vaccine.
The clinics may remain closed on Friday, chief health officer Dr. Heather Morrison told reporters during the daily swine flu news conference.

"We did not anticipate that as many people would be showing up for vaccines in these first few days as have been," she said.

"And we know we only have so much vaccine a week, so we can only have so many clinics a week, because there's only so much vaccine to give out a week."

By the end of Wednesday, 15,000 shots had been given out, Morrison said. The province only received about 20,000 shots at the beginning of the week.

Clinics in Souris, O'Leary and Summerside had to be closed Thursday. Although more vaccine is coming, the clinics may have to wrap up for this week, Morrison said.

The province may not be getting as much vaccine as expected for the coming week either, she said. But it's still not clear how many elementary schoolchildren will accept the vaccine.

There will be enough vaccine for all islanders, Morrison stressed, but for now, people who are at higher risk are the priority. Meanwhile, the province will open three more flu assessment centres across the island on Friday.

The centres are for people who have flu-like symptoms and have underlying conditions that put them at higher risk, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, diabetes, chronic health conditions, and pregnant women.

One flu assessment centre opened Thursday at the Four Neighbourhoods Family Health Centre in Charlottetown and was greeted by long lineups.

The other three centres will be in the Souris Hospital, the Urgent Care Centre in O'Leary, and Harbourside Family Health Centre in Summerside.

I think I'm going to wait to see if I can get it at a IDA pharmacy or similar where its done by appointment only. Not fond of the idea of waiting in line for it. In a week it'll be available for the general public here.

I think Japan has always been very progressive when it comes to communicable diseases. Where I worked there, if anyone had so much as a cold they'd wear masks, there was no stigma at all attached to doing that. In the U.S. you have to be on your deathbed before they even let you off work.

KIEV (AFP) - Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Friday ordered a three-week closure of Ukraine's schools and cinemas in the toughest measures adopted yet to combat the swine flu virus in Europe.

"From today, all the school establishments in Ukraine -- be they private or public -- will be put on three weeks of holiday," she told her cabinet in comments carried on Ukrainian television.

Tymoshenko said the government would also be banning "all public gatherings, every concert and every cinema showing for three weeks."

The government will also introduce "special regimes" to limit the movement of Ukraine's citizens from one region to another for non-urgent purposes, she said. Ukraine has borders with four EU countries.

The prime minister's tough actions came as Ukraine confirmed its first deaths from the A(H1N1) virus, amid a growing panic over several dozen unexplained deaths in the west of the country.

Four people in Ukraine are now confirmed to have died from the virus, the secretary of the country's national security council Raisa Bogatyriova said, according to the Ukrainian presidency.

In the Ternopil region alone in western Ukraine, 30 people have died of unexplained causes in the last days, health ministry spokeswoman Lyudmila Gordon told reporters.
Tymoshenko also threatened to revoke the licenses of pharmacies that failed to stock the appropriate level of anti-flu medicine and masks.

"We can say today that Ukraine has entered into the zone of the swine flu epidemic," Health Minister Vassyl Kniazevich said.

AFP correspondents in Kiev and the western city of Lviv said there had been long queues outside pharmacies in the past days as the population stocked up on anti-flu masks.

Many students whose courses were cancelled in Lviv and Ternopil left the cities, while those who remained were frequently seen wearing masks in public places.

Lemons, a traditional anti-flu remedy, sold out at markets in Lviv while supermarkets were selling them at double price.

There is currently only enough anti-flu medication in Lviv to last three to four days but central authorities have promised to make additional deliveries, said Lviv governor Mykola Kmit.

Tymoshenko will travel to the affected western Ternopil region later Friday to visit the "epicentre" of the epidemic, a government statement said.

The country's politicians, including Tymoshenko, have just started official campaigning for presidential elections scheduled for January 17.

The prime minister on Saturday held a mass outdoor rally in the centre of Kiev attended by tens of thousands of people to mark her party's confirmation of her candidacy in the presidential race.

President Viktor Yushchenko, Tymoshenko's political arch-rival who is also standing in the elections, was due to hold his own rally on Sunday but it is now unclear whether this can go ahead.

Residents of Kiev meanwhile were asking pharmacies for masks and medication but these were not always to be found in stock.

It's hit us hardcore here, we're well over 50 cases in the city. Mostly in the high school. My staff are all having conniption fits because some dumb ass rig pig spread it all over our hotel.

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. - An Ontario woman from the Niagara Falls area has died after contracting H1N1, following an outbreak in the region, marking the province's third confirmed death from the flu in a little over a week.

Niagara region health spokeswoman Fiona Peacefull says the woman had underlying health conditions, meaning she would have been in one of the high-priority groups to receive the vaccine.

Peacefull says the woman died sometime this week from H1N1 but she could not reveal her age or location due to patient confidentiality.

It is the second death from H1N1 in the Niagara area since the arrival of the flu strain in May. There are currently 119 confirmed cases of H1N1 in the region.

Dr. Robin Williams, medical officer of health in the Niagara region, says she recognizes that H1N1 is in the community, and while generally mild, it can also cause serious illness and death.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is urging healthy residents to allow high-risk groups to get the H1N1 vaccine first as long lines continue to snake around the province's flu clinics.

Wall St gets swine flu vaccines

I'm really happy that while hospitals and schools can't get their hands on the swine flu vaccines that our beloved Wall St hotshots like Goldman Sachs
got alot of doses.
We really need to protect these bigwigs and I think more hospitals and schools should give a portion of their vaccines to the truly needy Wall St
executives.
I for one am willing to donate my flu shot to help corporate America.
How about YOU?

This really ticks me off. The vaccine is still in short supply and should only be given out to high risk groups right now.

I have asthma and was hospitalized for it last month and I haven't been able to get one. My doctor doesn't have any and the various government websites are useless. I don't understand how the CDC is handling this. They had an article in our local paper about a pregnant woman who couldn't get one. Her OB hadn't gotten their shipment yet some dematologist got his. The CDC should prioritize their shipments so that doctors who have a higher percentage of at risk patients get them first like OB's and pulmonologists.

...and still WE wait, no vaccine available yet. This makes me seethe.

Yeah, in San Diego our prison inmates are getting theirs as well. I had to call 4 pediatrician offices to find one will to vaccinate my 18 mo. old because she doesn't have under lying health concerns but these guys get it automatically.

Let's not forget Guantanimo either.

CitiGroup and Goldman Sachs received hard-to-get vaccines from the Obama Administration.

You all do remember that CitiGroup was bailed out by the feds, right? Goldman Sachs might as well be a fourth branch of the state as well. Geitner and Bernancke are Goldman Sachs products.

It seems as though everyone around here knows or knows of someone who has gotten the H1N1 flu. I've also heard it's mainly children getting it, and maybe then a parent or caregiver gets it. I'm not in either of those groups, which is good, but it sounds like, according to my primary care doctor's office I have no chance of getting a shot anytime soon. They have gotten no vaccine, have no idea when and if they will, and even if they did, I'm in the bottom priority group.

So, I guess the question of whether or not to get the shot is, for now, moot.

Some advice about hand sanitizers... Make sure you get the kind that has alcohol in it. Do NOT get one that has Triclosan in it.
I've heard about making sure it has atleast 60% alcohol, but whats triclosan?

It's been registered as a Pesticide. It is in most, if not all, products that are labeled as "anti-bacterial" rather than alcohol because you can't have bar soap (for example) that contains alcohol. The warning is now that it causes super germs.

I don't know if they still do it but for awhile they were even putting it in children's toys to ward off germs.

Basic liquid soap (and bar soap if each person has their own bar, I wouldn't share it with someone else even if it was labeled "anti-bacterial" because bar soap harbors germs) does the job. Using soap and water, if you can, is better because that is the best way to get rid of germs.

Like has been said by others about using anti-bacterial soap for dishes in the kitchen would be the main exception because you have food bacteria that is nasty. But, other than that I wouldn't bother with using it.

Cat, 2 ferrets get swine flu, experts say some other pets may be vulnerable

Provided by Sheryl Ubelacker, Health Reporter, THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO - Canadians have been lining up across the country to get an H1N1 flu shot, but it may not be just themselves and their family members they have to worry about when it comes to contracting the virus.
Some pets may also be susceptible to the disease.
On Wednesday, U.S. officials confirmed that a 13-year-old cat was infected with swine flu. The domestic shorthair was treated last week at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has recovered.
"We've known certainly it's possible this could happen," said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the U.S Centers for Disease Control. "This may be the first instance where we have documentation that transmission occurred involving cats or dogs."
Swine flu was also confirmed in two pet ferrets in Oregon and Nebraska. Stormy, one of four pet ferrets owned by a Nebraska family, died last week after all the animals contracted H1N1 influenza from their owners.
Scott Weese, an expert in zoonotic diseases at the University of Guelph, said the animal cases underscore the need for owners of companion animals to realize that "pets are part of the household microbiologically, not just socially."
"So if you have an infectious disease, you try not to transmit it to your family members, and your pets should be part of that."
Weese said there are no hard data on which species of pets are vulnerable to H1N1 influenza, which carries a mix of human, avian and swine flu genes.
But he said ferrets, which are often used as a research model for human infectious diseases, are likely the pets most vulnerable to certain flu strains.
"One of the big questions is pet birds and pet pot-bellied pigs," he said Wednesday from Guelph, Ont. "Pet birds and pet pot-bellied pigs would be the next ones I'd be worried about because we know that these are susceptible to influenza."
However, when it comes to the most common pets in Canadian households - dogs and cats - Weese said felines are likely at higher risk for H1N1 than canines.
"We know that cats are susceptible to some influenza viruses. We know with H5N1 avian flu, cats can become infected, cats can get sick from it and cats can also shed the virus."
Dogs have their own influenza, and there is little concern about Fido infecting humans or vice versa, he said.
Still, "we never say never with an infectious disease," said Weese. "It's certainly possible."
He said horses fall prey to an equine flu that doesn't affect humans. But then there are all the other animals that people share their domestic lives with - from rabbits and gerbils to reptiles and rodents.
"And we know virtually nothing about a lot of them in terms of their susceptibility to influenza or any other diseases," Weese said.
The veterinarian who treated the cat in Iowa, Dr. Brett Sponseller, said two of the three people in the home had flu-like symptoms before the feline became ill.
Other influenza strains have been known to cross species, but Sponseller cautioned against drawing too many conclusions from the cat, including whether other pets could also get the swine flu.
"It's well-documented in influenza in general, but this is the first highly suspected case of H1N1 going from humans into a cat," he said. There is no H1N1 flu vaccine for pets.
Weese said pet owners should take the same precautions against spreading swine flu to pets as they would with humans - by avoiding close contact, especially face-to-face, and washing their hands frequently.
"It's something we certainly ... something we always say we have to pay a lot more attention to what, what goes on with household pets, because they're the individuals that some people have the closest contact with."

Indiana has H1N1 all over the damn place.

Got all sorts of flyers and emails from my six year old daughter's school, that she is in high risk, is in an elementary school (house of germs), etc.

Do you think there was anywhere I could get them?

I could have stood in line starting at 5 a.m. at a mall that ran out like 10 a.m. On a school day, too. In the hood.

Not any doctor we see has any. I've even tried the big hospitals downtown and they are all like, "we'll put you on a call list."

I thought I had caught the H1N1 this week and I went to the doctor on Friday. He diagnosed a sinus infection. He did tell me that he had seen many people with H1N1 over the past few weeks and he stated that for the most part it was a very mild flu that most people get over in a couple of days (like my Son did). He was the second doctor to tell me the media is blowing things up.

I know some in this thread have gotten very ill with it and I am not trying to diminish that.

I know rats are highly vulnerable to human illness. Strep throat can kill a rat in a matter of days if it comes into contact with someone who has it.

This is potentially a huge story:

We're hearing about a healthy, 40-year-old woman from Lindsay, in rural Ontario, who recieved the H1N1 vaccine last week. She became ill with swine flu yesterday and was flown to Mt. Sinai Hospital here in Toronto yesterday. She died there last night.

This is bound to renew fears - rightly or wrongly - that the vaccine itself is dangerous.
