Yeah, imagine if all other teams can spend 300+ million on players? I hate the Yankees for this -- buying World Series! YAY!!

One of the things that frustrates me about baseball -- no salary cap. I mean the stars of the Yankee players salary is probably bigger than oh the whole teams of the A's! You know? How is that being competitive?

Ok, I'm done with baseball lol

The yankees pay out millions in luxury taxes to the other teams that are in the smaller markets so they can compete. It's not the yanks fault that those team owners put that money in their pocket instead of into the team they own. If there was a salary cap it would work two ways. There would also have to be a minimum salary cap. If that happend many teAms would go broke.

You cannot expect owners of small market teams to be able to pay 420 million on salary on just 3 players -- than big market teams. It's insane. A salary cap will give owners, especially those in low-revenue areas, with a smaller market a fair shot at signing top talent.

Come on you can't compare a huge market as New York with a small market like Milwaukee. If teams in smaller markets cannot sign top talent so their teams have winning seasons ;fans will not go to the game -- not much revenue will be made compared to huge markets. Smaller markets can't afford to pay players so much money.

One of the negatives I see with having a salary cap is that the owners will keep most of the revenue. I don't know if a salary cap is the solution but something other than this tax revenue needs to be changed.

That's what I'm saying. The owners of the small market teams already pocket the revenue. The care more about profits than winning. I know you are a huge football fan. There is a good chance that after this year, no salery cap in the NFL. Get ready for Dallas vs new England every year.

But Jefe smaller markets don't get much revenue to begin with - that's the problem. A lot of small markets want to sign bigger talent but they can't. And what player would rather go to a team like the Pirates than the almighty Yankees?

Well, for football there might not be an NFL season in 2011!! There's so much talk about a lockout between the Players and Owners! See no salary cap, do we really want this? Patriots = Yankees.

Bottom line it all comes down to greediness and money.

Yankees won, and that's all that matters in my house tonight. Dad got to see his team win, in the WS their new stadium, at least once before he dies. My dad played semi-professional baseball way before I was born and sports have always been a big deal in our life. This whole season has been a learning experience for me, as dad says I've been asking all the "right questions" about the game! LOL I feel bad for the Phillies fans, but seeing my dad so happy tonight, well, nothing beats that! Seeing the look on A-Rod's face once the final out was made was priceless...

Well, that and Derek Jeter is a total babe... *sigh*

I was there last night, (die hard season ticket holder here) and I have to congratulate the Phillies too. You refused to hand us this trophy and that made it all the more fun for everyone.

You guys come to NY next year for the regular season again. They changed inter-league play schedules. It should be interesting.

PS: My dad is from Philly and they are one of my other favorite teams! lol

That 420 million dollar amount is over 8 years. This year for those 3 players was 64 million. The payroll was lower than it was last year.

Since the start of this decade, there have been 10 World Series. Eight different teams have won those 10 series. Since 2000, 10 of 14 AL teams and 13 of 16 NL teams have reached the postseason at least once. Since 1995, 26 of 30 MLB teams have reached the postseason at least once. How much more balanced and competitive can it be?

I want to add two things.

One, is that the 4 main players in the Yankees who have 5 rings now all came up through their farm system, they were not purchased at crazy prices originally.

The farms create the good players to start with and the worse teams always have first choice.

Two, on top of the small town versus big city argument, teams such as the Yankees have fans all over the country and world. They create the highest attendance days for smaller stadiums when they play there. They do this even in bad years.

This is spreading the wealth also. There really are many balances built in that many do not realize.

I mean come on, The Yankees, the only reason they have the caliber of players they have is due to the amount of money they can spend, otherwise, there is no way they would be able to afford all of the talent they have. To quote Ocho-Cinco: CHILD PLEASE!

Most teams don't have the capability to spend ridiculous amounts of money every year. I just don’t think this system is fair – some teams spend so much money on high caliber players because they want the best talent on their teams preventing smaller markers a better chance to compete. I'm sorry some smaller markets cannot spend that much money. I think the "luxury tax" they use now should be increased immensely, because a bigger penalty might prevent a team from spending so much like the Yankees.

And with that good-bye baseball see you guys in spring training or August.

Wow, the Yankee$ had a lower payroll this year, poor babies. The $64 million they paid for Teixeira/$abathia/Burnett is $24 million more than the entire projected 2010 payroll of the San Diego Padres. Balanced and competitive? Gimme a break. Only a handful of teams can brute force their way to a championship like the Yankee$ can. The Padres? They're a small market team and will probably never win the Big One despite having had some really good squads. (They were demolished by the Yankee$ in the 1998 World Series.)

Yeah, but the Yankee$ have the cash to hold on to these guys. Most of the other teams eventually lose their home-grown stars to teams like the Yankee$ who can toss out the $150 million contract offers.

Yep, exactly. Johnny Damon played here for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a Kansas City Royals team. Yankees eventually bought him from the Red Sox. I hated him after that. I mean, I know a guy's gotta feed his family and all (oh wait, that was Terrell Owens that said that...)

Yeah, I was shocked when Damon defected to the Red Sox' arch enemies. That trophy wife of his is an expensive habit, I'm sure, so maybe he had to sign with the Yankee$ just to keep her from dumping him for Jeter.

Do the Yankees have a dress code or something? I always though Damon looked cooler with the long hair.

But wouldn't that make it the players fault that baseball is so outrageous? If the players and their agents like Scott Boras were not demanding these salaries, it would be a whole different game.

Yet only the Yankees get blamed. What about the other high paying teams, the Red Sox and Mets are up there too.

A lot of the blame can go to the players' union and Donald Fehr. Major league baseball players have a very strong union and thus would never accept a salary cap. Though I'm in favor of salary caps, I'm only in favor of them if they're fair to owners and players alike. The NFL, for example, has salary caps that definitely favor the owners. I really can't blame the Yankees or their players for the current inequity. It's just that the inequity itself makes MLB much less attractive to me. The Yankees are a very good team but, as is obvious, non-Yankee fans are pretty sick of seeing them win the WS 2-3 times/decade. If I lived in NYC I'm sure I would feel differently.

Girardi was the manager of the Marlins when we lived in Florida. He was so great with the young players and the Marlins scumbag owner gave him a really raw deal.
I still hate the Yankees and I hope my boys get their health and their act together at Citi Field for next year.

The Yankees need to be removed from this equation just for moment, I am not saying they do not pay too much. I am just saying remove them and look at the rest. The Met, Sox and others are still way too far ahead of the the lower teams also.

Also, in all fairness, the payrolls of the teams does directly relate to the cost of living in the cities they are in. Of course all the cities are going to be ahead of the others, we make more and will pay more. That is why profit sharing has come about.

Back on topic, I really do agree with the person who said other teams use the money differently and could be bigger contenders if they wanted.

Smaller teams, with bad records, are given first choice of the drafts, and are given profits from the bigger teams. Plus if the Yankees really did buy their way to a ring, why do we not win every year.

We can't because, the heart on the smaller teams does kick our ass at times. We have so many because we won a lot way back when, when it was easier also and free agents didn't exist.

And PS, as a New Yorker, and a die hard Yankee fan, I hate ARod simply because of his salary. That came about because he and his agent are full of themselves. This is the first year he actually played in the post season even though he has been there before. There is no excuse for how high his salary has even been.

Why should the tax be increased, so the owners of the small market teams can pocket even more money then they already do? What should be done is they should make the small market teams put the money back into their team. If a owner refuses to make a effort to put a winning product on the field while raking in revenue sharing money hand over fist, it's not the Yankees fault. Look at the NBA. They have a salary cap. You think the Grizzlys, Thunder, Clippers, Warriors, Nets, Hornets, Kings, Pacers, Timberwolves, Bobcats, Raptors, and Bucks have a chance to win it all.? In the past 30 years, 20 MLB teams have won the World series. In the same time span only 9 teams have won the NBA title. The answer is a minimum salery cap. If you can't afford a team, sell it to someone who can.

Despite all of the above discussion, my Phillies played lousy and they STILL took the Yankees 6 games into the World Series. That makes me feel good.

I still hate the Yankees.
:P
That is all.

Is it just me or does it seem like championship games are played later each year?
When I was a kid, it didn't seem like the American baseball series was played this late in October.
And now the Superbowl gets pushed forward into February. Again, when I was a kid I think it was played like in the middle of Jan.

It was played an entire week later this year. Before now, we only have November games in 2001 because of 9-11. There was no explanation given. It was too cold for this.

The reason the games were pushed back is because fox didn't want the opening game of the world series to be on a week end, which is a slow tv viewing time besides NFL football. MLB changed it for them to a wendsday, where it would get more viewers.

ok but there were many other days off built into the postseason this year. Why was that?

In 1996 game 4 was won on Oct 26th. This year, game 4 was on Nov 1st.

Dang those Phillies

I really thought they were going to go 2 years in a row but they just couldn't pull it out.

Anyone else agree that the Phillies just didn't look like they really wanted it that bad this year? It seemed like the Yankees wanted it so much more. That sucks cuz I hate the Yankees. Don't know why, just always have.
